The Lærdal Tunnel – longest road tunnel in the world
June 14, 2008
When you travel around Norway, it is very common that you will pass through many tunnels along the way. Tunnels are built to make the roads shorter or safer due to the mountainous country of Norway.
On our trip last month, we passed through the world’s longest road tunnel called The Lærdal Tunnel. It was built in 1995 – 2000 and was officially opened on 27/11/2000. This tunnel is an important link in the ferry-free road connection between the Bergen area and Eastern Norway.
The mountain above the tunnel reach up to 1809 meters and the length of the tunnel is about 24.5 km, the world’s second longest, the St. Gottard Tunnel in Switzerland is only 16.9 km. To keep the drivers from being inattentive or falling asleep, special attention has been made to the lighting inside the tunnel. Besides the white lights that is used in the tunnel itself, there are also a short part of blue and green light in every 6 km… Cool
Thousands of tourists drive through the tunnel for this unique experience.
